BBC Web Developers가 만들었는데 단순하지만 정리가 잘 된 발표자료입니다. BBC는 프로그램, 음악 등 보유 컨텐트를 Linked Data로 만드는 현실적인 응용사례를 보여주고 있는데, 관련 내용의 introduction 정도의 내용입니다.

여러번 “Science” 무엇인지에 대해 고민을 한 적이 있다. 물론 지금도 여전히 진행중인 고민이다.

“Web Science”라는 단어는 작년에 연구소의 휴게실에 놓여진 한 권의 프린트된 인쇄물을 통해 알게 되었다.

분량이 적지 않아 대강 보며 넘겼는데 이것을 “science” 정의하려고 하나? 하는 고민은 했던 것 같다.

전체적인 내용면에서 큰 변화는 없지만 Communications of the ACM에 실린 한 편의 논문은 향후 “Web Science”의 방향을 제시한다는 면에서 의미가 있을 것 같다. 마치 시맨틱 웹에 대해 말할 때 Scientific American에 실린 기사가 계속 인용되듯이.

여기 실린 논문을 반쯤 읽다가 잠시 접어 두었다. 흥미있는 주제여서 생각을 정리할 필요가 있다고 해야 하나? 사실 이런 논문은 “어쩌면” 읽고 나서 이게 머야? 또는 뻔한 내용인데 하며 휙 던져 버릴 수 있을 수도 있다. 그런데 이런 논문은 소위 대가들이 써야 하는 것이고 그들의 생각을 읽어야 한다는 생각에 좀 차분히 읽고 싶어진다. 날씨가 좋으면 내일 연구소 잔디 밭에서 읽어보고 싶다.

webscience.org에 사전인쇄본이 있으니 참고할 수 있다. 인쇄본은 편집이 잘 되어 참 이쁘게 나왔다.

Web Science: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Understanding the Web

This text sets out a series of approaches to the analysis and synthesis
of the World Wide Web, and other web-like information structures.
A comprehensive set of research questions is outlined, together with
a sub-disciplinary breakdown, emphasising the multi-faceted nature of
the Web, and the multi-disciplinary nature of its study and development.
These questions and approaches together set out an agenda for
Web Science, the science of decentralised information systems. Web
Science is required both as a way to understand the Web, and as a way
to focus its development on key communicational and representational
requirements. The text surveys central engineering issues, such as the
development of the Semantic Web, Web services and P2P. Analytic
approaches to discover the Web’s topology, or its graph-like structures,
are examined. Finally, the Web as a technology is essentially socially
embedded; therefore various issues and requirements for Web use and
governance are also reviewed.

웹의 역사를 쉽고 간단히 정리하고 있다. Tim Berners-Lee가 발표한 내용인데 슬라이드 형식이라 빠르게볼수 있다.

사실, 대가들의 발표자료는 insight를 준다는 면에서 중요할 수 있지만, 비슷비슷한 내용도 많다.

이 자료도 그동안 보았던 것들과 같은 슬라이드가 많은 편인데, 그럼에도 눈에 띄는 어구가 하나 있다.

Don’t change the way data is currently managed.

뜻이야 다르겠지만, 내 해석은 사람 중심의 데이터 웹을 지향하는 것이 아닐까 싶다.

데이터가 만들어지고 소비되고 없어지는 라이프사이클은 현재 웹에서 진행되고 있는 방식을 유지해야한다.

이것저것 추가하려 하면 사용자는 흥미를 잃는다. 웹2.0이 준 교훈도 결국은 사용자 중심으로 웹을 바라보라는 것이 아니었을까?

웹의 미래는 ~~ 시맨틱 웹이지…이랬다가 욕 많이 먹을 것 같다.
